How much one might earn in a compensation plan is subject to too many moving parts to make any sort of accurate prediction: the compensation plan itself, percentages paid on product, profit margins of product, personal sales, down line sales, the factors are endless. Two important resources are available that will give you a good place to start on this arithmetic: (1) leading companies post average earnings disclosure charts which indicate the average earnings for consultants at various levels and stages of their direct selling program; (2) many companies provide online earnings calculators which allow consultants to plug in their own assumptions on their personal and group sales and activity, which are then used to calculate the payout based on their expected sales performance. These aren’t fool-proof tools but they will give you realistic expectations on potential earned income.

It’s important to be honest with yourself as well. Very few consultants make it ‘big time’ in direct selling, and that is because sales is hard work, difficult work and many give up shortly after running through their warm market (friends and family). But if you’re the type that loves to sell to every person that you come across in your daily life then you may be a great candidate for a consultant who earns really high auxiliary income.

Compensation plans are drawn by skilled craftsmen.

As the French say, “a chaque a son gout.” Translated, this means, to each his own taste. And this is the truth. There is no right or wrong when it comes to types of compensation plans, whether they be unilevel, stairstep breakaway, binary, matrix, Australia Two Up, etc.

In fact, it is rare today to see a compensation plan that does not combine elements of various models as well as various add on features such as a shared bonus pool, enroller bonus, check match, infinity bonus, generational payout, fast start bonus, etc. Compensation plans are drawn by skilled craftsmen such as Michael Sheffield of the Sheffield Group, www.Sheffieldnet.com, to incentivize differing types of behavior. And incentives may be accomplished by rewarding those who have substantial personal volume, substantial group volume, sponsor wide, sponsor deep, train their downline, demonstrate substantial retention, demonstrate the building of other leaders, etc. Differing compensation plan models reward differing types of behavior. In general party plan companies tend toward unilevel and generational bonuses. Consumables companies tend toward matrixes and binaries because the focus is on recruiting large downlines. Australia Two Up plans tend to be oriented to high-priced, one-time purchases.

As a general matter, all compensation plans have a similar amount to distribute, ranging from 30-50%. How the pie is cut differs from business to business. A party plan skews payments to the direct sale. A consumables plan skews payments to be spread over a larger base. In the end, the compensation plans chosen are tailored to the products, economic objectives and behavior to be incentivized.

There is no question that, over time, the MLM companies that have been the most successful in the MLM industry have involved distributors who have had a passion for the product, service and for what they are selling. A distributor shouldn’t join a direct sales company unless, number one, he or she really believes in the product. The distributor should be actively using the product. Distributors should feel a great sense of ease when explaining and sharing her product with others. Successful distributors should feel that they are doing their customers a favor when sharing the product/service rather than feel as if they are encroaching on customers’ space or friendship.

Most importantly, a distributor must be realistic about their expectations. Keep in mind that in the direct selling industry, 90 percent of those who are involved are only involved part time, working less than 20 hours per week. Very few people leave their primary jobs to join the MLM industry full time. In fact, in the direct sales business in the United States today, which is about a 30 billion dollar a year channel of distribution, there are about 13 million people involved. This translates into perhaps one in ten households involved in MLM, according to studies done by leading trade organizations. And, 90 percent of these folks are working in direct selling on a part time basis.

When MLM companies seek out distributors to sell their products and services, in reality, they are competing for each individual’s time. People have other distractions that occupy their lives and time. Life changes occur. They get a salary raise. They start coaching little league. They move. Distributors tend to flow in and out of the direct selling business, not necessarily because they don’t like the product or the business, but because it is a part time endeavor.

The most important thing distributors should remember when they go out and speak to other people about the company and opportunity is that they should remain positive about the product and the opportunity.

However, even more importantly, distributors should be realistic about what they are communicating. Be realistic about the claims being made about the product and the opportunity. This only makes common sense. In fact, common sense is a prevailing factor in this type of business.

Above all, distributors should be positive, realistic and exude common sense. If you are successful in these areas then you’ll likely be very successful in your direct selling business.
