Promoting your network marketing business can be done in many ways. Here are three ways to begin promoting your MLM business:

  1. Warm Market

Most network marketers first approach their warm market, that is, their friends, family and acquaintances. Friends and family can easily become your first customers, and in some cases, will also join the company in your downline.

  1. Social Media

Secondly, social media is an excellent way to advertise your business. Create a Facebook page and Twitter account used only for business purposes. Invite your existing friends and family to “like” or “follow” you on your business pages. Update your feed frequently with company promotions and special product pricing. Another underutilized method to advertise your business on social media is online groups. Search Facebook for local moms and dads groups if you are selling a parenting-related product. Search for business groups and groups that allow for business promotion and join them. Make sure the group allows sharing of businesses before you begin to post. Or, start your own Facebook or Google+ group! Online groups are great ways to network and share your home business with like-minded individuals in your community.

  1. Online Advertising

Thirdly, there are many online advertising websites that offer free classifieds posting. Write an ad and post it online for free. To find online classified websites, Google “free classifieds online” and choose one of the many websites that allow advertising of MLM products and services.

The key to success in any business is being able to sell to anyone and everyone. Successful consultants sell products to teachers at their child’s school, neighbors who they meet at the park, and even other parents at the PTA. Keep the success of your business at the front of your mind, no matter where you are or what you are doing and this will help you achieve success in your business!

Most companies would prohibit sales in flea markets, swap meets, trade shows or garage sales

Most companies would prohibit sales in flea markets, swap meets, kiosks, trade shows, garage sales, or other event locations. It is generally viewed that such locations dilute the value of the company’s products and opportunity. Companies typically prohibit sales in retail stores, but the purpose for this rule is to avoid the appearance of the company being in competition with the direct selling channel of its distributors, a model that is really based on person-to-person marketing. On the other hand, it is quite usual for companies to authorize sales at community fairs. In this case, a distributor is expected to obtain written approval and to operate a booth within company guidelines for use of advertising and its trademark. In addition, companies typically prohibit commingling company products with non-company products or the offering of other business opportunities.

As a general matter, MLM companies will be very specific about what distributors can and cannot say about the company’s products. Usually, this information will appear in the company’s literature. MLM companies can find themselves in serious mess with state officials, the FTC, the FDA, and other government agencies if unauthorized product claims are being made by consultants.

In 1994, The Dietary Supplement Act enabled MLM companies and their distributors to amplify their statements on the benefits of dietary supplements. Under the 1994 Dietary Supplement Act, third-party literature and/or scientific studies, which are generic in nature, are allowed to be passed out to the public.

MLM companies that have specific data to backup their statements may make claims about ingredients in their products when the claims relate specifically to their impact on the structure and function of the human body, as opposed to medical therapeutic claims. For instance, under The Dietary Supplement Act, a direct sales company may comment that vitamin C is beneficial to connective tissue. Keep in mind, however, that this is not the same thing as claiming that a particular nutrient in a product will treat or cure a connective tissue disease.

Q:  Why do companies restrict the type of advertising carried on by their distributors?

A: Company rules regarding advertising are usually very detailed. Companies are zealous about protecting their trademarks. In addition, they want to avoid inappropriate claims about earnings opportunities or product properties, such as medical claims.
