Products that Sell the Best through Network Marketing

As a general matter direct selling, which is often also referred to as network marketing and multilevel marketing, is a channel of distribution best suited to market consumer products and services directly to the customer, or end consumer. Some business-to-business, commercial companies market their business products and services to other businesses. Many times business-to-business products and services are best suited to be sold by staffed sales professionals, as opposed to the sales consultants used by network marketing companies.

Historically, the products sold by direct selling companies are in the categories of personal care, health/nutritional, cosmetics, jewelry, household products, and technology, etc. These types of products are not only marketed to the end consumer, but the end consumer is often the best candidate to pursue a part-time opportunity in marketing those products as well. And, thus network marketing is not only best suited for consumer (as opposed to business) sales, but the potential pool of recruits is to be found in the thousands, millions of end consumers.

This is not to say that network marketing is not involved in a wide array of both consumable and one-time use products and services for end consumers. In fact, certain markets have been created by direct sellers, including water treatment devices, magnetic products, pre-paid legal services, home food storage containers, etc. In addition, the industry has established great success in the marketing of telcom, energy and various insurance/financial products. Its imprint can even be found in application to the real estate industry. Sales of the U.S. network marketing industry exceed $30 billion and the number of participants is approaching 20 million.

Hard Facts and Statistics about the Direct Selling Industry – Updated for 2015

The Direct Selling Association released the MLM statistics for direct sellers for 2015. The numbers are riveting:

2 million people were involved in direct selling in the U.S. during 2015.
Those people sold an estimated $36.12 billion dollars in retail sales, an increase of 4.8% from 2014.
2015 revenues were higher than any other year in history.

In 2014, 18.2 million people were involved in direct selling. In 2015, that number increased by 11% to 20.2 billion people. Of those people, 28.2% were between the ages of 35 and 44. 24.9% were between the ages of 44 and 54. 20.5% of those involved were between the ages of 25 and 34. Women represent 77.4% of participates, while men represent 22.6% in 2015.

The direct selling industry continues to grow. In 2014, U.S. retail sales were $34.47 billion, and in 2015, that number increased by 4.8% to $36.12 billion. The highest sales in product group belongs to wellness products, at 12 billion dollars in 2015, around 10 billion in 2014, and roughly 9 billion in 2013. Services were the second major group of products sold with roughly 8 billion in 2015.

Geographically, the South held the highest sales at 35.7%. The West held 26.2%. The Midwest held 20.3% and the Northeast 17.5%.

Hard Facts about a Growing Industry – Updated 2016 for 2014

Did you know that over *18 million people in the United States alone were involved in direct selling in 2014? The estimated sales of these people are $34.5 billion, which is up 5.5% from 2013. Here are some statistics about the industry, overviewing 2014:

In 2009, 16.1 million people were involved in direct selling, compared to 15.8 million in 2010, 15.6 million in 2011, 15.9 million in 2012, 16.8 million in 2013, and 18.2 million in 2014. The increase was 8.3% from 2013 to 2014.
In 2014, 74.4% of company distributors were women, and 25.6% were men. In 2013 that number was 74.2% for women, 25.8% for men, and in 2012, 76.6% were women and 23.4% were men.
U.S. retail sales were $34.47 billion in 2014, $32.67 in 2013, and $31.63 in 2012.
In 2014, 71.5% of direct sales were person-to-person, 22.4% were party plan, and 6.1% were other. Compared to 2013 when 70.2% were person-to-person and 22.5% were party plan.
30% of sales in 2014 were in the wellness product group. Personal care was around 15%. Services were around 22%.
The highest sales by region goes to the South, were 37.4% of goods and services were sold. The West sold 24.3%. And, the Midwest came in third at 20.5%

The MLM industry held consistent and increasing growth from 2013 to 2014. I bet you’re thinking, “Geez! Where’s my piece of that pie!”

World Federation of Direct Selling Associations released global direct selling statistics for 2014

The largest direct sales markets globally include the United States (19% of global sales), followed by China (17% of global sales), Japan (9% of global sales), Korea (9% of global sales), and Brazil (7% of global sales), totaling just over 60% of global sales.

To summarize some of the statistics, the number of direct sellers rose globally to 100 million, up 3.4% from 2013.

Independent business owners worldwide join the direct selling salesforce for many reasons; to earn extra part-time income at home, to learn new skills and build self-esteem, to fight for a social cause, and to make new friends. The press release reports that most independent distributors started out as customers, and in many cases, joined the opportunity to receive a discount on products, not necessarily to sell to others.

Industry retail sales hit record highs, the press release reports, saying, “Retail sales rose 6.4% to US$182.8 billion in 2014. So the steady growth curve in Direct Selling continues, now with a 3-year compound annual growth rate of 6.5% for the period from 2011-2014.”

What are the Largest Global Markets for Direct Selling? The WFDSA Released Annual Results: ‘Global Sales and Direct Selling Community – 2012’

The World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA) has released its 2012 global direct sales statistics. In its document titled “Global Sales and Direct Selling Community – 2012” the WFDSA outlined worldwide regional sales, the top ten global markets for direct sales, and the statistics of retail sales across country and region.

In summary, Asia and the Pacific represent the highest percentage of global retail sales with 44 percent of the global direct selling market; followed by the Americas with 40 percent, Europe with 16 percent, and Africa and the Middle East with one percent of the global direct sales market.

The global direct selling industry is up by 5.4%, $166,876 million.
