Front loading generally refers to a process in which a MLM company, or a sponsoring distributor, encourages a new distributor to purchase far more product than is commercially reasonable under the circumstances. Often the “push” is explained to the recruit as necessary to qualify in the plan. This is an unacceptable practice is often one indicia of a pyramid scheme.

On the other hand, virtually all regulatory agencies recognize that a purchase of an “at cost” sales kit is an acceptable practice in the mainstream of leading direct selling companies. Such mandated kits are typically in the $50-$100 range. They generally entail “hard copy” or online supply of sales and marketing materials as well as ongoing sales and marketing materials updates for a year. Typically the mandated sales kit does not include product and generally a company offers an optional deluxe kit that may include product. Such an optional kit, which is often referred to as a “fast start” kit, may contain several hundred dollars of product. This is not unusual. Although the same regulatory standards on upfront mandated purchases are applicable to party plan companies as they are to other companies, it is not unusual to see party plan companies mandate a beginning starter kit that contains a wide array of products, with a price tag several hundred dollars. Regulatory agencies are very liberal in their view of such mandated purchases in party plan companies because party plan companies are so overwhelmingly retail oriented and the movement of product to retail customers is the norm, and not the exception, for party plan companies.

Your cost of goods is calculated as your acquisition or manufacturing cost. The more frequent question we come across relates to pricing. Most MLM experts agree that you must have adequate margins to pay commissions and to make a profit. Different products and services carry different profit margins. In addition, smaller margins may be satisfactory with high-priced products because there is still room for profit. Most MLM companies are likely to pay total commissions equal to between 30 and 45 percent of the price sold to distributors for resale, or prices for which consumers buy directly from the company. A typical company will try to achieve a minimum 5-7 times markup to allow for commissions, overhead and profit. Typical markup for resale by distributors is 25% of their purchase price. A good place to visit this issue is at the MLM Startup Conference, offered by www.mlmlegal.com, where experts discuss margins, pricing, profit, proformas, and a whole lot more.

What are the key trends in the legal and business environment in today’s world?

A global $2 billion-dollar industry has great press, but it must be self-regulating, looking out for the consumers and distributors. Regulatory agencies today want MLM companies to have a great product and sell to real consumers. What does that mean? Personal use. Does the product stand on its own? Do real consumers buy it? Are you selling product or the opportunity?

Is Your MLM / Network Marketing Company Failing? Here’s Why.Who or what is generally responsible for the failure of the majority of MLM companies?

To answer this question, it is best to look at the two phases of MLM companies: start up and maturity.

Although many things can go wrong in a startup direct selling company, two factors are repeated with frequency for the failure to launch. The first factor is inability to recruit. MLM is a business based on recruiting a successful sales force to market products. (Obviously, there are many important factors ranging from logistics to personnel to technology to quality control to distribution… and all these can go wrong as well.) It should be noted that the need for capital is in inverse proportion to the ability to recruit. A MLM company that can recruit is often positioned for fast growth and may even become a cash cow. If the company does not have that native ability, it needs sufficient capital to hire the talent to make recruiting happen. And in the absence of the recruitment asset, a company should plan on a much longer trajectory to profitability.

And the recruitment challenge dovetails with the second major reason that companies fail at the onset: lack of adequate capital or funding. Many companies start the business without adequate capital to allow for a one or two year run to become profitable. In fact, many companies assume that they will be profitable within months or that they will not need capital for growth. The lack of buffer capital to survive the early unprofitable days of a company is a prescription for early failure.

As to mature companies – who’ve been around for years and years but find themselves on a downward spiral, the key answer is to continuously innovate and create ways to bond with both distributors and customers. Companies that can’t grow with the market, or maintain loyalty of distributors and customers, will find that sales will plateau and ultimately decline. This is a branding business and a relationship business. Unless a mature company is ready to continually reinvent itself and stay fresh, it may find itself on a slow, or sometimes rapid, road to contraction and failure.

MLM, network marketing, otherwise known as direct selling, is a relationships business. Those that succeed do so because they have a deep relationship with their customers and distributors. To maintain long-term success as a MLM business owner, you too have to make sure that you’re not just running a company, but a business of relationships.

As mentioned, networking is a big part of MLM. Come network with us. How Many Distributors Fail in Network Marketing? http://mlmlegal.com/MLMBlog/distributors-fail-network-marketing/ Sat, 30 Sep 2017 17:17:13 +0000 http://mlmlegal.com/MLMBlog/?p=1239 What is the meaning of failure? How Many Distributors Fail in Network Marketing?

What does failing mean to you?

What is the meaning of failure? If a distributor only makes a few hundred dollars a month, does that mean they have “failed?” What would that make the distributor who doesn’t make any money from network marketing at all? Or the one who loses money?

It’s difficult, in a sense, to lose money as a network marketing distributor in today’s world. This is due to the policy changes in direct selling companies. Most network marketing companies offer a full refund (or at least a 90% refund) to distributors who have changed their minds and want to return their starter kits.

In addition to policy changes within the company, the majority of leading MLM companies offer earnings disclosures on their websites which disclose the level of earnings and average earnings of all active distributors. Some consultants join a direct selling company to simply become discount buyers of the company’s products. These sorts of independent business owners don’t actually make money with their distributorship since they aren’t pursuing the opportunity to begin with.

The vast majority of active distributors (who make money with the company) earn only a few hundred dollars per month. There is a common saying in the industry, “95% of distributors fail.” This isn’t a fair statement unless you view the company’s products/services purchased by consultants as worthless. Unless you’re working for a pyramid scheme, this simply isn’t the case. Most MLM companies who build a direct selling business model do so because of the unique opportunity to offer their high-quality products and exclusive services through person-to-person selling.

So, how many distributors fail in network marketing? The answer depends on how you define failure. And if you view the products and services offered by your MLM company as special, then you’ve succeeded in making yourself happy and happiness alone is a measurement of success.

Incentivize to Increase Company Sales in Network MarketingIncentivize to increase sales across your business. There are vastly different types of incentive programs.

The most assumed and expected incentives are monetary and come in the form of bonuses and commissions. Since direct selling companies are trying to incentivize different types of consultant behavior, the compensation plans of MLM companies are often complex and multi-task to provide incentives for retail selling, preferred recurring customers, building wide, building deep, working with immediate downlines and deep into a downline, time sensitive personal and group sales production, personal and group sales, longevity, quick start, among others. Incentive programs are usually designed to affect the distributor’s ultimate sales behavior.

Beyond cash incentives, most leading network marketing companies understand the power and inspiration behind noncash incentives that resonate financially and emotionally with distributors and keep them bonded to the company. Among the common incentives are auto lease support programs, house payment support programs, travel/trip incentives, conventions, reward pins and accessories, iPads, and tangible giveaways.

Of course, the most powerful noncash incentive is recognition for distributor accomplishments.
